AI & Data Sharing

Monk Portfolio has four optional AI features: a chat assistant, a portfolio evaluation report, Monk Insights (period performance with web-searched context), and screenshot-based asset import. They are powered by OpenAI. This page lists — precisely — what leaves your device when you use them, and what never does.

Opt-in only
Every AI feature — chat, portfolio evaluation, Monk Insights, and screenshot import — is gated behind an explicit consent screen, and that consent is enforced both in the app and at the server. Until you grant it, no portfolio data (symbols, allocation or target percentages, or screenshots) reaches OpenAI. Once you accept, that data is sent only while you use the feature.
  • Nothing AI-related is kept long-term: chat history is transient (held briefly in a server-side cache that auto-expires and clears when you start a new chat), evaluation and insights are stateless, and uploaded screenshots are processed in-flight and discarded.

The provider

OpenAI, proxied through our server so your device never holds an API key. How OpenAI handles these inputs is governed by OpenAI's own policies.

What is sent

Sent to OpenAI
  • Your chat messages and follow-up questions
  • Asset symbols (e.g. AAPL, BTC) and their type
  • Current allocation percentages (and target percentages where relevant)
  • Period performance percentages (for insights)
  • Screenshots you upload for import — the image, from which symbols, types, and quantities are read
Never sent
  • Dollar amounts or account balances
  • Typed-in share counts from the text features (chat, evaluation, insights)
  • Your name, email, Apple ID, IP address
  • Device identifiers or analytics IDs
  • Your encrypted blob or any part of it
  • Information about other portfolios or views

Screenshot import

You pick an image of a brokerage screen. Monk uploads it to our server, which forwards it to OpenAI for symbol and quantity extraction. The image is processed to produce structured JSON and then discarded — it is not stored.

We strongly recommend cropping or blurring anything you don't want to share (account numbers, personal names shown on the screen) before importing. The app is only asking the model for holdings, but the image is what it is.

Managing consent

AI is opt-in, and your consent is stored only on your device. Open Settings → AI Data Sharing at any time to re-read exactly what is shared with OpenAI.

Not financial advice
AI output in Monk Portfolio is an educational sandbox. It can be wrong, outdated, or oversimplified. Always do your own research and consult a licensed professional before acting on anything it says.
